Special nutrition assistance program for Women, Infants, and Children

WIC serves to safeguard the health of low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing healthy foods, breastfeeding promotion and support, nutrition education, and community referrals. Benefits come on an eWIC (debit) card with a 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN).

  • To be eligible for WIC, you have to identify as one of the following:

    • Pregnant woman

    • Breastfeeding woman who has had a baby in the past 12 months

    • Woman who has had a baby in the last six months

    • Infant

    • Child up to their 5th birthday

    If you do identify as one of the following, then you also have to meet the following requirements:

    • Live in North Carolina

    • Meet WIC Income Guidelines

    • Talk with a WIC Nutritionist about health and nutrition habits

  • Before applying for WIC assistance, make sure you have the following materials:

    • Proof of Identity

      • For example, driver’s license, Social Security Card, or birth certificate

    • Proof of residency

      • For example, driver’s license, recent utility bill, or a bank statement

    • Proof of income

      • For example, your most recent paycheck stub or tax return

  • There are seven food packages that recipients may be assigned to that determines the amount of money on your card and the amount of food you can purchase each month.

    For pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding women, packages V, VI, and VII provide a fruit and vegetable cash-value benefit (CVB). 

    Monthly WIC Benefits

    Package V: $47 if pregnant or $52 if partially breastfeeding (up to one year)

    Package VI: $47 for postpartum (up to 6 months)

    Package VII: $52 for fully breastfeeding (up to one year)

  • At 12 a.m. on the first day of the benefit period. The benefit period starts once you get approved for your WIC card. Benefits for each month expires at 12 a.m. on the last day of the benefit period. 

    Important Note: You must visit your local clinic for an appointment to renew benefits monthly.

    1. What places accept WIC?

      Most major U.S. grocery stores and retailers accept WIC. For more information, please visit the North Carolina Authorized WIC Vendors handout.

    2. What items can I purchase with WIC?

      For infants, you can purchase infant formula, infant cereal, infant fruits and vegetables, and infant meals.

      For women and children, you can purchase dairy products, cereal, whole-grain and whole-wheat baked goods, fruits and vegetables, tofu, beans, eggs, and canned fish.

    3. What items can’t I purchase with WIC?

      With WIC benefits, you cannot purchase dried fruits and vegetables, anything with additive or artificial sugars or anything organic.

    4. What happens at a WIC application appointment?

      At a WIC application appointment, 

      • Your application materials will be reviewed for eligibility

      • Your height and weight will be taken

      • A blood test will be performed to assess iron levels

      • Your health and eating habits will be assessed

      • Your nutrition concerns or questions will be discussed

      • Your health information will be reviewed for eligibility

      After your eligibility has been certified, you will get an eWIC (debit) card and a WIC staff member will review all the foods you will receive and how to shop for WIC-approved foods.
